Production spanned 3 continents including the company’s corporate offices in Kyoto, packing and quality control centers in central Japan, manufacturing plants in Taiwan and a variety of locations in Hawaii.

    The project was shot on Blackmagic and Arriflex cameras and lenses. Editorial by Visual Sherpa, audio and finishing by Warner Bros post production services.

    The Gentle Barn’s unique philosophy rehabilitates and gives sanctuary to abused and neglected animals and connects their stories of survival and healing to the personal experiences of inner city, at-risk, special needs children and adults who have suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse. Rescued animals arrive malnourished and overloaded with toxins from a life of abuse and morbid neglect. The Gentle Barn uses Sun Chlorella to rebuild the animals’ immunity, detox their bodies and fortify their health with it’s plethora of nutrients.

    The project was produced by Visual Sherpa over the course of 6 months. A variety of hidden camera techniques were implemented during the investigations. The horrifying and abusive footage was mostly left out of the edit but used as evidence to help authorities shut down the butchering facility and prosecute it’s operators to the fullest extent of the law. This inspiring story and alignment of mission statements serves as a prime example of great corporate social responsibility at work; branding Sun Chlorella’s pet products while fueling support for the Gentle Barn Foundation’s important work.

    “Leaving Home” tells the story of a young girl setting off to college thanks to the Marine Corp Scholarship Fund and her Father’s service to this country. Pride and honor are not merely marketing phrases, but they truely define the experience of service, humility, and selflessness for a Marine. We gained much insight and admiration for those who embrace these concepts and risk their well-being merely for the opportunity to express them. How different this portrait might look for many Marine daughters who’s father did not make it home to help transition them into this crucial phase of young adulthood.

    Rarely does a Director get an opportunity to incorporate great music along with a great cause. For all the kids featured, it was their first experience in front of a camera. The moments in between their performance were magical; as the their awkwardness and sheepish grins gave a glimpse into their brave yet fragile souls. Savannah’s voice is mesmerizing and filming her performing the song was almost a spiritual experience for everyone within ear-shot.

    Beautiful was shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon lenses. The exteriors were all lit by the sun and shaped by our grip department. Great care was taken to stay within the dynamic range of the sensor (for the most part) and in doing so, we were able to create some beautiful images.

    “Beautiful” is written by Linda Perry and made popular by Christina Aguilera. Music by Harvey Mason. The project was handed down by Ellen Degeneres at Eleveneleven Records and Larry Jackson of Interscope/Geffen. Color by Johnny McPheeter of Libertad Soul.     The Gentle Barn teamed up with Mercy for Animals during an undercover investigation to rescue four baby cows from a Texas dairy rearing farm. Director/DP Joey Julius was embedded with Jay Weiner, President of The Gentle Barn Foundation during the Texas rescue. This short film is part of a multifaceted project for Ellen Degeneres. Executive producers Lauren Corraro from Telepictures and John & Eamon from Planet Grande Pictures headed up the assignment. “Rescue at E6″ was shot with Canon 5D Mark II cameras.
